Welcome to our December Newsletter. As we enter the final month of this year, I am noticing the overwhelming need of my clients, friends and communities to slow down and to restore. So I hope that if you can, you are making time for yourself.
Choices we make when we consider what we post and how are exactly the path to better digital wellbeing. Stay safe. Stay smart.
Social media algorithms learn from us and our content.
Most algorithms learn from large data sets, which also runs the risk of biases.
Algorithms can be adjusted at any time and users might not even realise that it is happening.
The regulation of algorithms is currently often discussed in the media. More and more local authorities are pushing for full algorithmic transparency and regulation, but it is still early days. It’s hard to figure out how to regulate this area of technology, what is fair and what is safe. In the meantime, we need to think about our own safety and wellbeing online.
The algorithmic calculations are not transparent. How does that make you feel?
Algorithms are not objective. How does it feel to know this?
t might be helpful to start learning just the basics of how those algorithms work on the networks you tend to use, simply to make the platform work for you, not against you.
This month we are talking about algorithms. Maybe let’s start with this basic question: are you aware of social channels that use algorithms? Do you know what they are?
