Over recent years, gaming has become a global phenomenon, and many believe that this is a bad thing as they think that gaming leads to social isolation. However, this is a misconception, in my opinion. Gaming can be a tool for healthy socialising and can provide a connection for gamers of all ages.
The leading advantage of gaming for socialising is the sense of community centred around it. Whether it is the forums of a problem-solving game where players discover and share their solutions to puzzles or a discord server of a multiplayer game where players can look for teammates, each game has its own community passionate about it. This is important because if someone is playing the same game as you it is likely that they will share other interests with you also, fostering connections and even friendships from one common interest.
Additionally, gaming can serve as an inclusive platform for those with accessibility issues, such as issues with leaving home or mobility issues, or those who may struggle with face-to-face interactions. This shows the power of having an online area for people to healthily socialise together, despite any issues one might face in grounded reality.
